Dead by Daylight’s Lights Out Returns: Everything You Need To Know

·

Dead by Daylight’s darkest Modifier – literally, not thematically – is back. In celebration of Castlevania’s arrival to the Fog, this version of Lights Out features a gothic aesthetic – and that’s not the only update.

When we initially announced Modifiers, we mentioned it was an iterative process. Lights Out was the first to be released, bringing a tense and atmospheric experience to our players. It was thrilling to watch as Survivors and Killers alike delved into the darkness, stripped of the tools they’d grown to know and love.

Once the Modifier wrapped up, we gathered player feedback and began combing through it. There was plenty that people liked about Lights Out, but we noticed a few recurring opportunities for improvement.

One of the biggest ones centered around Survivors being unable to efficiently seek out Generators, while Killers knew exactly where they were. This led to an optimal playstyle in which Killers could simply wait around Generators and easily deal with unsuspecting Survivors. While this is not without thematic charm, it doesn’t exactly make for an exciting gameplay experience.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Enter the Lantern, themed as a candelabra in honor of Castlevania. The Lantern is a unique Survivor Item that allows them to see the Aura of any nearby Generator and provides a glimpse at the classic in-game HUD. Once found, a Survivor can place their Lantern on top of the Generator to reveal it to their teammates in the area.

Once that Generator has been completed, if the Lantern remains on top of it, the Killer will temporarily lose the ability to see Generator Auras. This should go a long way in leveling the playing field, ensuring a balanced and competitive experience for both sides.

That’s not to say Killers will be left entirely in the dark, as they can destroy any Lantern that’s been left on a Generator to prematurely end the effect. They’ll also be able to knock Items directly out of a Survivor’s hands when downing them, like an altered version of The Cannibal’s Franklin’s Demise Perk.

RETURNING FEATURES & KEY CHANGES

The essence of Lights Out remains unchanged. Once again, players will find themselves without Perks, a HUD, Terror Radius, or Scratch Marks, stripping things down for a nail-biting bare-bones experience. While Survivors will not be able to load in with Items, they can find and open Chests in game. Even better: chests will only contain Rare or Higher Items.

Generators have also been tweaked, with a slight boost to Repair speed and an automatic 5% Repair state head start to ensure Survivors can follow the sound and find them more easily. This should help ensure that games feel a little more even, allowing both roles to immerse themselves with minimal frustration.

Finally, 2 new Maps have entered the rotation, bringing the total up to 6: Dead Dawg Saloon and Greenville Square.

NO CAMPING FOR YOU

At the end of the day, a simple gaming rule exists – if players can do it, some will do it. During the previous run of Lights Out, we found that some Killers were a little too keen on setting up tents and lighting a few marshmallows, juuuuust beyond the borders of our anti-camp system. To prevent this, we’ve increased the range of our anti-face camp system.

A NEW EVENT TOME

Lights Out 2.0 brings a new Event Tome for players to engage with, providing a new page of Survivor and Killer challenges to complete. While some challenges will center around the newest characters – Dracula and Trevor Belmont – playing as them will not be mandatory to complete the Tome or earn any of the unlockable rewards.

Speaking of rewards, this Event Tome includes 3 unlockable Cosmetics: Gothic Lantern (Charm), Pixel Dark Lord (Badge), and Dracula’s Castle (Banner).
